A survey was held in 2002 that reported that nearly three hundred cubic metres of natural gas per day was produced in Iran. Household usage of natural gas and industrial usage accounts for nearly fifty three cubic metres. In 2002, the energy consumption in terms of natural gas usage was estimated to be forty two percent and the government was interested in increasing it to fifty five percent till 2005 (Petrochemical Industry and Market of Iran, 2005).

Petrochemicals in Iran

According to Ahmed Rahgozar, who is the head of National Petrochemical Company (NPC), Iran is in need of foreign resources like financing by foreign companies and skill to improve the current state of the petrochemical industry (Petrochemical Industry and Market of Iran, 2005). NPC is a company, which is owned by the government of Iran. Iran currently imports petrochemicals that have the value of three billion dollars per year of value. After 1989, the country capability of production related to petrochemicals has increased (WWP, 2006). According to the government, the country has enhanced the domestic production nearly greater than tenfold as compared to its domestic production in 1989. This raise in domestic productivity of petrochemicals has reached to five million tons per year after 1989 (Ule and Alexander, 2004). Many projects are still under the manufacturing phase. After completion of these projects, the country productivity will raise up to more than seven million tons per year. Many new projects are also planned for the enhancement of the industry of petrochemicals (Petrochemical Industry and Market of Iran, 2005). These projects include polymers plants, olefins plants and many other plants related to extension and growth of facilities for petrochemical industry and others for the production and management of petrochemicals. The plants are located in Isfahan, Bandar Khomeini and Kharg Island (Nasseri and Daya, 2007).
