To counteract the labor shortage the parliament made legislations to allow them import labor from other countries like China and India. The imported labor were awarded good pay as compared to the previous times when the slaves were greatly mishandled and given a little amount of money of could not even sustain their living. The imported labor especially those from India made drastic changes in the already falling sugar industry. They further brought other forms of plantation agriculture including the introduction of rice farming in the plantation. The Indian labors brought cultural changes to the natives by introduction of their Islamic and Hindu religion which caused the rise in the number of mosques and temples build all through the streets of major towns in Caribbean. Also some of these Indians intermarried with the native while part of them decided not to inter marry but remain constricted to their own culture

As time passed by the plantation owners were shifting to other forms because labor force was becoming a great problem. Then most of the owners abandoned sugar plantations immediately and began to sell their sugar fields of which forced the ex-slaves to form small cooperatives which allowed them to solicit for funds to by the now neglected sugar plantations. The portion or part of the ex-slaves who were not able to raise the money to buy land decided to live in the sugar fields as squatters. Now there was a shift from sugar to growing of food crops by the ex-slaves of which included; bananas, arrow roots, coconuts and rice production, beside this the ex-slaves kept bees which allowed them produce honey and wax.
