Caribbean essay

It is believed that the political alienation or leadership of the Caribbean spans way back from the colonial era in which there were British colonists, plus the government structures it uses in administering its day to day activities. Most of their political structure is what was instilled to them during independence, and to date they are still applying some of these guidelines. There were three colonies coming in different forms that is: those who settled initially in the Caribbean, those present during the war which lasted for five years and finally those who conquered later in the end of eighteenth century (Maurice).

The first group of colonists arose when there was the upcoming of colonization in various countries of the world. These types of colonists had a system of leadership structure in which the governor was the main chief of the group or the monarchy and had two houses namely: the upper and the lower house of which the upper house was appointed and the lower house elected. Here only the wealthy individuals were allowed to vote and would leave the poor having no chance to elect their leaders of choice. Power was vested in the hands of the governor and the national assembly. The governors main jurisdiction was to ensure that the law was well adhered to while the assembly’s main function was to make laws and pass bills mainly dealing with finances plus the governors salary and therefore this was a great chance taken by assembly to force some things to be done or refuse to pass some bills.

They also had local authorities of which the office bearers were elected every year by the freeholders and their main purpose was to collect money for helping the poor people, hiring of teachers, providing for people who were engaged in religious activities since they had little time to look for money to sustain themselves because they spent most of their time converting people into religion, construction of roads and finally the running of the daily routines of the authorities including paying the salaries for the office holders.
